Post-Processing Services for Custom Manufactured Parts

Post-Processing Services for Custom Manufactured Parts

Post-processing prepares manufactured parts for assembly, testing, appearance, and final use. Mastars coordinates finishing and secondary operations with CNC machining, sheet metal, molding, and 3D printing while considering material behavior, critical dimensions, and assembly requirements.

Post-Processing Capabilities

Mastars provides finishing and secondary operations based on material, appearance, wear, corrosion, and dimensional requirements.
Process Typical Applications Key Technical Points
Anodizing Aluminum CNC and sheet metal parts Type II decorative and Type III hard anodizing; coating buildup should be considered on bores, threads, and mating surfaces.
Passivation 304 / 316 stainless steel parts Improves corrosion resistance without adding a conventional coating layer; suitable for precision surfaces.
Electroplating Steel, copper, and selected plastic parts Zinc, nickel, and chrome options for corrosion protection, conductivity, wear, or appearance.
PVD Coating Metal cosmetic and wear surfaces Thin, hard coating with good wear resistance and decorative options such as gunmetal or champagne tones.
Sandblasting CNC, cast, and sheet metal parts Creates a uniform matte finish and prepares surfaces for anodizing, painting, or coating.
Polishing Metal and plastic cosmetic parts Satin, high-gloss, or mirror-like finishes; material removal must be controlled on edges and precision features.
Painting / Powder Coating Plastic and metal parts Gloss, matte, metallic, and custom-color painting; powder coating for suitable metal parts. Surface preparation affects adhesion and appearance.
Soft-Touch Coating Handheld plastic parts Creates a soft, low-slip tactile surface. Better for feel and handling than high-wear surfaces where harder coatings may be more suitable.
UV Coating Plastic housings and panels Provides a hard, wear-resistant cosmetic surface. Deep cavities and shadowed areas can be more difficult to cure uniformly.
Screen Printing Flat or slightly curved parts Best for larger logos, graphics, and functional markings.
Pad Printing Small or irregular surfaces Suitable for curved, recessed, or complex surfaces with smaller print areas.
Laser Marking Metal and selected plastic parts Permanent text, serial numbers, and QR codes; reference line width down to about 0.05 mm.
Hydro Dipping Complex 3D cosmetic surfaces Applies carbon-fiber, wood-grain, and other decorative patterns; usually requires a protective topcoat.
Deburring & Edge Finishing CNC, sheet metal, and cast parts Removes burrs and sharp edges without altering sealing, locating, or mating features.
Weld Grinding Sheet metal assemblies Blends welds and prepares surfaces for coating; excessive grinding can affect wall thickness and flatness.
Secondary CNC Machining Cast and near-net-shape parts Adds precision holes, threads, datums, and sealing surfaces after primary forming.

Why Choose Mastars?

Test Real Materials
Use production-grade metals, engineering plastics, sheet materials, and molded resins when strength, heat resistance, wear, or actual material behavior matters.
Verify Critical Fits
Check mating surfaces, hole locations, interfaces, and tolerance stacks before the design is released. CMM, FAI, and dimensional inspection can verify critical features where required.
Catch Risks Early
Review tool access, wall thickness, draft, shrinkage, warpage, bend geometry, support placement, and other process risks before parts are made.
Meet Quality Requirements
ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and IATF 16949 quality systems support projects with stricter inspection, documentation, and production requirements.
Simplify Coordination
Combine CNC, 3D printing, sheet metal, molding, casting, finishing, inserts, and assembly under one project instead of managing multiple suppliers and handoffs.
Scale with Confidence
Move from prototype to low-volume builds and production with the same manufacturing partner. Material, tooling, tolerance, inspection, quantity, and cost are reviewed again before scaling.

Post-Processing Services FAQs

  • What post-processing services does Mastars offer?

Mastars supports both surface finishing and secondary operations for metal and plastic parts. Capabilities include anodizing, plating, passivation, PVD, blasting, polishing, painting and coating, printing and marking, deburring, weld finishing, and secondary CNC machining. Available options depend on the part material, geometry, and final requirements.

  • Can Mastars handle manufacturing and post-processing together?

Yes. CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, molding, casting, 3D printing, and post-processing can be coordinated within the same manufacturing project. This reduces supplier handoffs and makes it easier to manage critical dimensions, cosmetic requirements, and inspection before final delivery.

  • Can post-processing affect part tolerances?

Yes. Coatings add material, while polishing, grinding, and blasting can remove or alter material at the surface. Threads, bores, sealing faces, bearing fits, and mating surfaces should therefore be identified before finishing so masking, machining allowance, or post-finish machining can be planned where required.

  • How do I choose the right finish for my part?

It depends on the material and what the surface needs to do. Appearance is only one factor. Corrosion resistance, wear, handling, conductivity, cleaning requirements, assembly interfaces, and service environment can all change which finish is appropriate.

  • Can you match a specific color or cosmetic finish?

Often yes. Paint and other decorative finishes can be matched to specified color references where applicable, while anodizing and other processes can be controlled to agreed samples or appearance requirements. Exact color consistency can vary with material batch, surface preparation, geometry, and process conditions.

  • Can you finish prototype and production parts?

Yes. Post-processing can be used on prototypes to evaluate appearance, handling, and functional surfaces, then refined for repeat production. A prototype finish should not automatically be treated as a production specification; color range, texture, masking, inspection criteria, and acceptable variation should be defined before scaling.

  • Can Mastars post-process parts that were manufactured elsewhere?

It depends. In many cases, yes, but the incoming material, dimensions, existing surface condition, and required finish need to be reviewed first. Parts with unknown alloys, contamination, previous coatings, or insufficient machining allowance may require additional preparation or may not be suitable for the intended process.

  • How do you inspect parts after finishing?

Inspection depends on the feature being controlled. Mastars supports first article inspection, in-process inspection, final inspection, CMM measurement, optical measurement, and visual surface checks. Critical dimensions should be identified before finishing so the inspection plan reflects the final functional condition of the part.

  • How long does post-processing take?

It depends on the process and specification. Simple deburring, polishing, or marking can usually move faster than multi-stage anodizing, plating, PVD, painting, or processes requiring masking, color approval, curing, or additional inspection. Lead time should be confirmed together with the manufacturing and finishing requirements.

  • What information should I provide for a quote?

Rough information is fine to start. Send your CAD file or drawing and tell us the material, required finish, quantity, and any critical cosmetic or functional surfaces. If applicable, also include color references, masking areas, coating requirements, mating features, and inspection criteria.
