Engineering Support from Design to Manufacturing

A design can work in CAD and still create manufacturing problems. Mastars connects design decisions with real production requirements to identify risks early and improve manufacturability.

Mechanical Design & CAD

Develop and refine 3D models, components, assemblies, and engineering drawings around functional and manufacturing requirements.

DFM & DFA

Review wall thickness, draft, radii, tolerances, tool access, part count, assembly sequence, and process limitations.

Tooling Engineering

Support mold design, moldflow analysis, cooling, ejection, tooling structure, and manufacturability before tooling release.

Design Validation

Evaluate fit, form, function, assembly, critical dimensions, material behavior, and design revisions through prototypes and trial builds.

Manufacturing Process Comparison

Compare processes by application, tooling, engineering considerations, and key capabilities.
Manufacturing Process Best For Tooling Key Engineering Considerations Key Capabilities
CNC Machining Precision functional parts, prototypes & production components No dedicated tooling Tolerances, tool access, wall thickness, workholding & material behavior ±0.005 mm tolerances; up to 1500 × 1050 × 600 mm
3D Printing Complex geometries, rapid iterations & early validation No tooling Build orientation, support placement, minimum features & post-processing SLA, SLS, FDM & metal printing; SLA layers below 0.05 mm
Sheet Metal Fabrication Enclosures, brackets, panels & structural assemblies Usually no dedicated tooling for prototypes Bend radius, hole-to-bend distance, bend allowance, welding & assembly ±0.05 mm laser cutting; cutting, bending & welding
Injection Molding Repeatable plastic parts & scalable production Injection mold required Draft, wall thickness, ribs, bosses, shrinkage, parting lines & ejection DFM, moldflow & trial molding; mold precision down to 0.002 mm
Metal Casting Complex metal housings, structural parts & production components Mold or pattern required Draft, wall thickness, shrinkage, porosity, machining allowance & parting strategy Die, gravity, sand & investment casting; <1 mm thin walls for pressure die casting
Vacuum Casting Small batches of production-like plastic parts Silicone mold required Master quality, shrinkage, wall thickness, material simulation & mold wear Typically 15–25 casts per mold; polyurethane material options

Why Choose Mastars?

Test Real Materials
Use production-grade metals, engineering plastics, sheet materials, and molded resins when strength, heat resistance, wear, or actual material behavior matters.
Verify Critical Fits
Check mating surfaces, hole locations, interfaces, and tolerance stacks before the design is released. CMM, FAI, and dimensional inspection can verify critical features where required.
Catch Risks Early
Review tool access, wall thickness, draft, shrinkage, warpage, bend geometry, support placement, and other process risks before parts are made.
Meet Quality Requirements
ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and IATF 16949 quality systems support projects with stricter inspection, documentation, and production requirements.
Simplify Coordination
Combine CNC, 3D printing, sheet metal, molding, casting, finishing, inserts, and assembly under one project instead of managing multiple suppliers and handoffs.
Scale with Confidence
Move from prototype to low-volume builds and production with the same manufacturing partner. Material, tooling, tolerance, inspection, quantity, and cost are reviewed again before scaling.

Design and Engineering Services FAQ

  • Can Mastars work with an existing CAD design?

Yes. We can review existing 3D models and drawings for manufacturability, tolerances, material selection, assembly, and process-related risks. The goal is usually to preserve the intended function while identifying changes that may improve manufacturing reliability or reduce unnecessary complexity.

  • Can I contact you before my design is finished?

Yes. Rough information is fine to start. Early concepts, sketches, reference parts, preliminary CAD, or incomplete drawings can still be useful for discussing manufacturing direction. More complete files will be needed before final quotation, tooling, or production.

  • What does your DFM review cover?

It depends on the manufacturing process. Typical checks include wall thickness, draft, radii, tool access, hole locations, bend geometry, shrinkage, parting lines, support requirements, critical interfaces, tolerance stack-up, and assembly conditions.

  • Will you change my design during the engineering review?

No changes should be made without agreement. We may recommend revisions when a feature creates unnecessary cost, poor tool access, molding risk, deformation, difficult assembly, or unstable tolerances. The design intent remains the starting point for every recommendation.

  • Does a successful prototype mean the design is ready for production?

No. A validated prototype does not always mean the design is production-ready. Prototype processes may use different materials, tooling, tolerances, surface conditions, or quantities. Production readiness requires another review of repeatability, process stability, tooling, inspection, and cost.

  • Can you help select the right manufacturing process?

Yes. Process selection depends on geometry, material, quantity, tolerances, surface requirements, lead time, and future production plans. CNC machining, 3D printing, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, metal casting, and vacuum casting each involve different trade-offs.

  • Can Mastars support the project after prototype validation?

Yes. Support can continue through design refinement, tooling, trial builds, pilot production, inspection planning, and repeat production. This helps reduce information loss when the project moves from development into manufacturing.

  • How are critical dimensions controlled during production?

Critical dimensions should be identified early in the drawing or engineering review. Depending on the project, inspection may include first article inspection, in-process checks, CMM measurement, optical inspection, and final inspection against approved specifications.

  • Can Mastars create or refine CAD files?

Yes. We can develop or refine 3D CAD models and engineering drawings based on existing files, sketches, reference parts, or product requirements. The level of work depends on how complete the starting information is and what needs to be validated before manufacturing.
