Advantages and Challenges of CNC Machining
Advantages of CNC Machining
Challenges of CNC Machining
CNC manufacturing’s high performance has two key trade-offs: geometric complexity increases costs, with simple, sturdy parts being optimal for milling and turning; tool access limits designs, though more machine axes enable more complex features. Startup costs are also high due to the need for professional setup, tool loading and programming—but these fixed costs can be reduced via batch production, minimal part repositioning and 5-axis+ machining (which eliminates manual repositioning for multi-faceted parts).
Wire EDM machining is slower and costlier than alternative processes, with its material scope limited strictly to electrically conductive options.

What is CNC Machining?
CNC (computer numerical control) machining is an automated, high-speed manufacturing process for shaping metal/plastic stock. Common equipment includes 3/4/5-axis milling machines, lathes and routers, with cutting modes varying by tool/workpiece movement combinations.
Skilled machinists program tool paths via CAD models for final part geometry. CNC machines deliver high-precision, repeatable results for most metal alloys and rigid plastics, suiting aerospace, medical, robotics and other industries. Xometry offers CNC services with custom quotes for 40+ materials, from aluminum/acetal to titanium, PEEK and Teflon.
