The density of ordinary carbon steel is 7.85 g / cm3, while that of aluminum alloy is 2.7 g / cm3. In order to reach the strength of safety standard, the thickness of aluminum hub is at least three times or more than that of steel hub. Take the 16 inch wheel hub for comparison. The thickness of the steel wheel hub is only about 2mm, while the thickness of the aluminum alloy wheel hub is about 10mm. It is also a 16 inch wheel hub. The weight of the steel wheel hub is about 6.5kg, and the weight of the aluminum alloy wheel hub is about 8.3kg. So the steel wheel hub is lighter than the aluminum alloy wheel hub.

forging and casting

The aluminum alloy wheel hub has low density, so it can dissipate heat faster, which is conducive to the heat dissipation of the tire, so it is indeed safer. So here comes the question...! The so-called unsprung quality is so important, why use a heavier aluminum hub? Let's not be coy. Let's give you the answer: forged aluminum alloy wheels are lighter! Before we talk about forging aluminum alloy wheels, let's talk about why we should reduce the unsprung mass?

The lighter the unsprung mass, the more efficient the shock absorber will be. Whether compression or rebound, the lighter the weight, the faster the reaction. This is also a simple physical problem, namely inertia! The lighter the weight of an object, the smaller the inertia. The lighter the unsprung mass, the faster the response speed of the tire when passing through the rolling road, so as to ensure the grip performance of the tire, improve the comfort and increase the safety.

Since it needs to be lighter, reduce the unsprung mass, and at the same time, it also needs to take into account the good-looking and improve the heat dissipation capacity, engineers have created a forging process. The forged aluminum alloy hub not only takes into account the advantages of ordinary cast aluminum alloy hub, but also is lighter! Higher strength!

What is the difference between forging and casting?

The forging rim is to heat the aluminum ingot to about 400 ℃, and then press it with thousands or even tens of thousands of tons of forging presses, so that the metal density becomes higher and the lattice arrangement is more orderly, reaching a higher strength than casting. By forging, as cast porosity and welding holes of metal can be eliminated.

Because the metal during forging is in solid state, the shape cannot change as much as that of liquid casting, so the hub blank can only be forged first, and then the shape can be completed after fine milling by CNC machine tool.
