The surfing events for the Paris Olympics took place in Tahiti, an archipelago in French Polynesia, located in the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 10,000 miles away from Paris. Tahiti's Tia Hoop is a renowned surf spot with massive 12- to 15-meter waves that provide ideal conditions for athletes, but there are also significant diving reefs hidden beneath the waves, posing a major safety risk for the competitors. Consequently, Tia Hoop has been recognized as one of the top ten deadliest surfing spots, with at least five surfers losing their lives there since 2000.
The surfing competition at the Paris Olympics featured 24 male and 24 female surfers. China's first Olympic surfer, Yang Siqi, participated and advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Peru's Aguirre in the second round of the competition.
