Acrylic, also known as plexiglass, is derived from English acrylic plastic and its chemical name is polymethylmethacrylate. It is an important plastic polymer material developed earlier and widely used in the construction industry. Acrylic is one of the most commonly used materials in prototype processing. Due to its transparent properties, it can be used as an alternative material for glass in many parts. Let's take a look at the characteristics and advantages of acrylic materials?


1. Physical properties of acrylic materials

1) The density of PMMA is lower than that of glass. The density of PMMA is about 1.15-1.19 g / cm3, half that of glass (2.40-2.80 g / cm3).

2) PMMA has high mechanical strength. The relative molecular weight of PMMA is about 2 million. It is a long-chain polymer, and the chain forming the molecule is very soft. Therefore, the strength of PMMA is relatively high, and the tensile and impact resistance is 7 ~ 18 times higher than that of ordinary glass.

3) The melting point of PMMA is low. The melting point of PMMA is about 130 – 140 ° C, which is much lower than the high temperature of glass at about 1000 degrees.

4) PMMA has high light transmittance

a. Visible light: PMMA is the best polymer transparent material at present, with a light transmittance of 92%, which is higher than that of glass.

b. Ultraviolet light: PMMA can effectively filter ultraviolet light with wavelength less than 300nm, but the filtering effect is poor between 300nm and 400nm.

c. Infrared: PMMA allows infrared (IR) with wavelength less than 2800nm to pass through. Longer wavelength IR, less than 25000nm, can be basically blocked. There is a special colored PMMA, which can allow specific wavelength IR to pass through and block visible light at the same time.

5) The glass transition temperature of PMMA is about 105 ° C.

2. Chemical properties of acrylic materials

1) Due to its large branched chain and high viscosity of polymethylmethacrylate, the processing speed is relatively slow when using thermal processing method.

2) Cyanoacrylate, dichloromethane or chloroform can slightly dissolve plexiglass, and then the two plexiglass can be firmly bonded together.

3) Producing 1kg PMMA requires about 2kg oil. Under the condition of oxygen, PMMA starts to burn at 458 ° C and generates carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide and some low molecular compounds including formaldehyde.



Advantages of acrylic materials

1. It has crystal like transparency, light transmittance of more than 92%, soft light, clear vision, good printability and spraying. Acrylic colored with dyes by appropriate printing and spraying process has good color development effect.

2. It has excellent weather resistance, high surface hardness and gloss, and good high temperature performance. It has flame resistance and does not spontaneous combustion, but it belongs to inflammable goods and does not have spontaneous combustion. The wear resistance is close to that of aluminum, with good stability and corrosion resistance to a variety of chemicals.

3. It has good processing performance. It can be hot formed or machined.

4. It has light transmittance comparable to glass, but the density is only half that of glass. In addition, it is not as fragile as glass. Even if it is damaged, it will not form sharp fragments like glass.

5. It is tough, hard and rigid. The thermal deformation temperature is 80 ℃ and the bending strength is 110MPa. It is easy to repair, so you can wipe the sanitary ware with a soft foam dipped in some toothpaste.

6. The table basin, bathtub and toilet made of acrylic are not only exquisite in style, durable, but also environmentally friendly. Its radiation line is almost the same as that of human bones.
