Lenovo ThinkPad product PCR material content increased to 95%

On August 17, Lenovo officially held an Innovation Open Day with the theme of "Open New Imagination" at its global headquarters in Beijing. In addition to displaying more than 180 technological innovations, Lenovo also demonstrated the concrete application and practice of its green design innovation.

The current market is more common post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics, the proportion of recycled plastic used in the processing process is generally 30% to 50%, most of the rest is newly produced plastic and additives, want to further enhance the proportion of recycled plastic, the performance of the material will become worse.

In order to better contribute to environmental protection, Lenovo has set its sights on increasing the proportion of recycled plastics. Starting from 2017, Lenovo and Sony spent 3.5 years developing, doing 250 sets of formulation experiments, nearly 40 times of formulation validation, and 12 times of batch testing, and finally applied SORPLAS™ environmental materials, where more than 95% of raw materials are recycled plastics (PCR), to Lenovo's products. in early 2021, ThinkPad 45W/ 65W power adapter has been successfully mass-produced, covering about 85% of ThinkPad products, and then also introduced in speakers and notebook structural parts.

Lenovo team is determined to continue to explore the possibility of using high percentage recycled materials in ThinkPad batteries, and boldly challenge higher challenges! After dozens of formula adjustments, more than a hundred tests and verifications, and adjustments to the molding process, it achieved extremely high requirements while solving the problems of short shot, trapped air, and unsatisfied filling, successfully opening a new era of 97% recycling ratio for batteries.

In April 2022, Lenovo successfully mass-produced the industry's first 97% PCC battery in ThinkPad, further driving the process of accelerating the application of high-recycling ratio plastics in the notebook industry. Compared to the 25%-30% PCC batteries commonly used in the industry, this environmentally friendly and cutting-edge PCC 97% battery makes a significant contribution to Lenovo's ESG strategy - it can reduce 80 tons of virgin plastic use and 171 tons of CO2 emissions in one year when used in 10 ThinkPad products.

It is understood that Lenovo will continue to promote the wider use of high percentage PCR materials in keycaps, high-power power adapters and cases for ThinkPad products in the coming years.
