An artificial eye developed by a team in the United States uses 3D printing technology to distribute some special ink on the half eye. When the ink dries, it is equipped with a photosensitive diode. When a blind person wears it, the sensed image can be converted into an electronic signal and transmitted to the brain, so as to see the things around him.

The eyeball is made of a very soft special material, which is safe and reliable.

As early as a few years ago, researchers at the University of Minnesota used a 3D printer to create an "artificial eye" that can detect changes in light levels, and said the next step is to add more light receivers to its surface.

The research team used their customized 3D printer, using silver particles as the base ink, to operate on a hemispherical glass dome. The silver particle ink will remain in place and dry evenly, rather than flowing down the curved surface. Then, the researchers printed photodiodes using semiconductor polymer materials to convert light into electrical energy. The whole process takes about an hour.

Although there is still a long way to go to reliably print active electronic products, 3D printing semiconductors have shown efficiency comparable to semiconductor devices manufactured by micromachining equipment. The former can easily print semiconductor devices on curved surfaces, but the latter can't.

The researchers created a three-dimensional artificial eye that can detect changes in light levels. Bionic eyes imitate the function of the retina to help people restore vision. They work with implants to convert the images they see into electrical pulses of retinal cells, which send the image signals back to the brain. Through 3D printing technology, scientists can create bionic eyes faster, which is expected to become a viable commercial solution in the future, but the date when the final version can be produced for patients has not been finalized.
