What is SLA in Rapid Prototyping?

Stereolithography (SLA) is a versatile 3D printing process ideal for creating concept models, cosmetic prototypes, and complex parts with delicate geometries. It uses an additive manufacturing approach, curing thermoset resin with a UV laser to build parts layer by layer. SLA stands out for its wide material selection, ultra-high feature resolution, and the ability to deliver high-quality surface finishes for various application needs.

How Does SLA 3D Printing Work?

The SLA machine first traces support structures, then the part itself, using a UV laser on liquid thermoset resin. After each layer cures, the platform lowers, a recoating bar applies new resin, and the cycle repeats until printing finishes.

Newly printed parts are cleaned with solvents in a lab, then supports are manually removed. Parts undergo UV curing to solidify surfaces, followed by custom finishing. To avoid degradation, SLA parts should be used with minimal UV exposure and humidity.

Why Choose SLA?

As an advanced additive manufacturing process, Stereolithography (SLA) excels at producing 3D printed parts with miniature features, tight dimensional tolerances, and uniformly smooth surface quality.

Design Guidelines and Capabilities of SLA

Our basic guidelines for stereolithography include important design considerations to help improve part manufacturability, enhance cosmetic appearance, and reduce overall production time.

TolerancesFor well-designed parts, tolerances in the X/Y dimension of ±0.002 in. (0.05mm) for first inch plus 0.1% of nominal length. (0.001mm/mm), and Z dimension tolerances of ±0.005 in. for first inch plus 0.1% of nominal length, can typically be achieved. Note that tolerances may change depending on part geometry.

Surface Finishing Options

Right out of the liquid resin vat, raw SLA parts are far from shelf-ready. They emerge dripping with sticky, uncured monomer and are anchored to dense support structures that can leave nasty scars if not meticulously removed. Furthermore, premium clear resins naturally look cloudy and foggy straight after printing.

To turn raw prints into injection-molded-quality aesthetic models or high-precision functional parts, we offer rigorous manual post-processing and surface refinement. Explore our professional SLA finishing options below:

· Standard Finish / Support Removal & Post-Curing

All parts undergo thorough isopropyl alcohol (IPA) washing and automated UV post-curing to achieve complete polymerization and full mechanical strength. Support structures are carefully clipped by hand, and remaining contact tips are lightly sanded to ensure a flush, clean, and dimensionally accurate surface profile.

· Hand Sanding & Mirror Polishing

Using progressive wet-sanding grits (up to 2000+) and specialized buffing compounds, our technicians eliminate any remaining layer lines and support scars. This process is essential for premium aesthetic models, and it transforms cloudy raw "clear resin" prints into optically clear, glass-like components.

· Custom Painting & UV-Resistant Coating

For exhibition-grade or consumer-testing models, we apply professional primers followed by custom color-matching (Pantone or RAL) in matte, satin, or high-gloss finishes. We also offer specialized UV-blocking clear coats to prevent the natural yellowing and degradation of SLA resins when exposed to sunlight.
